Robert Cabrera is a native New Yorker. After two years in the United States Navy, he attended the Cooper Union, received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon) and shortly after became a Registered Architect in the State of New York. In the 1960s he joined Ballard, Todd and Associates as an Associate Architect, later as a Senior Associate of David Todd Associates and subsequently a partner in the firm of Todd, Basile, Cabrera and Wong. For more than 15 years, he was responsible for the design and administration of a wide range of projects including most of their housing and school projects, and all of their hotel/resort commissions including several resort villages.
In 1979, Cabrera/Barricklo Architects was founded and during the 1980s the firm produced detailed design and construction documents for a number of restoration and historic preservation projects, were part of a design team for the rehabilitation of NYC Battery Park and completed the design & construction of a 160 unit Resort Village in the Caribbean.. During the early 1990s Mr. Cabrera developed an Open Space Design Guidelines for the Waterfront at Hoboken, New Jersey, was intimately involved with the design and construction of eight residential projects on the Caribbean islands of St. Martin, Grand Cayman, Aruba and the Bahamas and was part of the design team for the N.Y.C. Central Park Children’s Zoo where he designed the Main Building within a unique garden complex. From the late 1990’s his firm became Cabrera Group Architects and designed and produced variety of small and medium size projects for the Port Authority of N.Y. & N.J., the Wildlife Conservation Society and a numerous private clients.
During his many years of practice and travels Mr. Cabrera developed a particular interest and expertise in village planning and design. He currently is involved in analyzing and promoting interest in the potential of sustainable village development as an antidote to suburban sprawl.
